We welcome the renaming of the branch of the Museum of Kyiv History to “Sadyba na Kudriavtsi”

On March 1, 2022, the Museum of Kyiv History announced the closure of the museum dedicated to the “great Russian poet.”

After prolonged work by the staff on a new concept, the Museum’s Academic Council approved a new name — “Sadyba na Kudriavtsi.” On March 1, 2023, by order of the head of the Kyiv City State Administration, Serhiy Popko, the decision to rename the branch was officially adopted by the Kyiv authorities.

“The new name of the Museum branch, ‘Sadyba na Kudriavtsi,’ fully corresponds to the historical period of the 19th–early 20th centuries — one of the important periods in the city’s history. During this time, the governance structure, territorial configuration of Kyiv, and architectural appearance were completely transformed, and the period was also marked by active political life. All of this influenced the lives of the city’s residents, changing their habits, moods, and daily life,” emphasized Hanna Starostenko, Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration.

“‘Sadyba na Kudriavtsi’ will tell the story of the historical locality, daily life, social and cultural life of Kyiv in the 19th century,” said Diana Popova, General Director of the Museum of Kyiv History. She added: “The official renaming of the two branches of the Museum of Kyiv History is a long-awaited event for us. The Museum and Exhibition Center is already actively operating, showcasing not only contemporary art, so this name fully reflects its essence. Extremely meticulous work was carried out by the head of the department ‘Kyiv from the second half of the 17th to the early 20th century,’ renowned researcher Olha Druh, author of the concept of the branch ‘Sadyba na Kudriavtsi.’ It was her idea to recreate the atmosphere of urban life in a typical city estate and to demonstrate the uniqueness and national specificity of Kyiv in the 19th–early 20th centuries, highlighting the city’s role in the national-cultural revival. Much work lies ahead, but we eagerly anticipate presenting the results and developments.”

We are confident that the opening of this important new cultural center in the historic area of Kyiv along Sichovykh Striltsiv Street and the southern slopes above Hlybochytska Street will be a remarkable event!
