General information

The Literature-Memorial Museum to Mikhail Bulgakov was founded and opened to visitors in 1989 as a branch of the Museum of Kyiv History. The museum is housed in Building No. 13 on Andriiivskyi Descent. From 1906 to 1919, this house was home to the family of Afanasii Bulgakov, professor at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and father of Mikhail Bulgakov.

It was here that Bulgakov spent his youth and student years. He also returned to this house from the front of the First World War. In this home, he worked as a doctor and received patients. It was here that he read his first short stories.

This house became the central setting of Bulgakov’s first novel, The White Guard, and the play The Days of the Turbins.

Chronicle

After the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the museum staff dismantled the main part of the memorial exhibition, as well as fragments of the exhibition based on the novel The White Guard. The majority of the exhibits were moved to the museum storage.

The museum resumed its work with visitors in summer of 2022 and currently operates with exhibitions related to the history of the estate and its former residents.

Exhibitions

The full-scale invasion prompted a rethinking of the place, content, and role of cultural sites on the map of Kyiv, especially those directly connected to its culture and cultural figures. Naturally, the team of the M. Bulgakov Literary Memorial Museum initiated a public discussion on the problem “What should the renewed museum be like?” and launched a series of roundtables attended by professionals, including historians, philosophers, cultural scholars, and museum specialists.

Interviews from these discussions are available on the museum’s website: bulgakovmuseum.com.
