General information

The Literary and Memorial Museum of M. Bulgakov was founded and opened to visitors in 1989 as a branch of the Museum of the History of the City of Kyiv. House No. 13 on Andriyivskyi Descent was transferred to the museum. The family of the professor of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy Afanasy Bulgakov (father of Mikhail Bulgakov) lived here from 1906 to 1919. Bulgakov spent his youth and student life in this building. He also returned here from the front of the First World War. He worked as a doctor and received patients in this house. He also read his first stories here. It was this house that became the center of the plot of Bulgakov’s first novel, The White Guard, and the play, Days of the Turbins.

Magazine

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into the territory of Ukraine, the Museum employees have dismantled the main part of the memorial exposition, as well as fragments of the exposition based on the novel “The White Guard”. The lion’s share of the exhibits has been moved to the museum storage. The Museum resumed work with visitors in the summer of 2022 and operates in the mode of exhibitions related to the history of the estate and its inhabitants.

Exhibitions

The full-scale invasion was an impetus for rethinking the place, content and role of cultural objects on the map of Kyiv, primarily those that are directly related to its culture and figures. Of course, the team of the M. Bulgakov Literary and Memorial Museum initiated a public discussion on the topic “What should a renewed museum be like?” and began a series of round tables, in which representatives of the professional community participate: historians, philosophers, cultural studies, museum specialists. These interviews can be found on the museum’s website bulgakovmuseum.com.
