On the Day of Defenders and Defender Women of Ukraine, 1 October at 16:00, the Museum of Kyiv History and the National Union of Artists of Ukraine present the exhibition project “Call Sign: Artist” — a true dialogue between the front line and the home front, showing the realities of war through the eyes of those who experience it firsthand.
This exhibition holds special significance, as the authors of the works presented are Kyiv artists who voluntarily went to defend their city in the first days of the full-scale invasion. Each piece here is a fragment of life captured on panels from ammunition crates and charred pieces of wood. This is a unique artistic world where brushes become weapons and canvases shields. It is a hymn to resilience, sounding from the trenches and dugouts. Dedicated to the Day of Defenders and Defender Women of Ukraine, the exhibition “Call Sign: Artist” is a true symbol of the unbreakable creative spirit of the Ukrainian people.
“It is symbolic that this exhibition is held at the Museum of Kyiv History. Here, art born in the crucible of the battle for the capital becomes part of its history — showing how we defend not only the land but also the soul and dignity,” emphasizes Victoria Mukha, General Director of the Museum of Kyiv History.
“Call Sign: Artist” is a space where art not only reflects reality but also creates it. The exhibition demonstrates how art can be not only aesthetic but also therapeutic, documentary, and sacred, transforming lived experiences into symbols of faith and victory. The exhibition features works by members of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, including Serhii Herasymenko, Vasyl Telichko-Evert, Artem Shevchenko, Volodymyr Hurin, Volodymyr Vakulenko, Mykola Medynskyi, and Vasyl Semko.
“This exhibition is evidence that even in the crucible of war, it is possible to create, to love, and to find meaning. It is a reminder that art can be as powerful as weapons, and sometimes even stronger, because it fights for souls, for memory, and for our victory,” emphasizes Hanna Yarova, Deputy Head of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine and co-organizer of the project.
