Painting Exhibition “Picturesque Ukraine”

At the Museum and Exhibition Center of the Museum of Kyiv History, the painting exhibition “Picturesque Ukraine” is presented, dedicated to the work of Ukrainian artists of the second half of the 20th century.

The selection includes landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and narrative compositions by artists of various Ukrainian schools. The diversity of names and artistic approaches, stylistic techniques, and regional features are united by a common thread of love for the native land and the keen observation of the artistic eye. The works are imbued with attention to color and detail, to Ukrainian landscapes and types.

“Ukrainian art of the last century did not exist outside its time, but was nourished by its pain and tragedy, inspired by the beauty of places dear to the heart, and sought freedom of expression. This makes it all the more interesting for us to explore and study today. In the selection presented at the Museum, we will have the opportunity to see Ukraine through the eyes of remarkable painters, to explore their personal stories, and to be convinced of how diverse art was across Ukrainian lands,” — Diana Popova, General Director of the Museum of Kyiv History, emphasizes the relevance of this project precisely now.

The presented works represent a fairly broad time span from the 1940s to the 1990s, which vividly illustrates the influence of historical and social contexts, creative explorations and innovations, and the transformation of styles and artistic trends. “Understanding the context in which these works were created, the personalities of the artists, especially the Sixtiers, who often had to defend their civic and artistic convictions and suffered from the political regime for it, makes one feel such acts of creative freedom particularly acutely,” explains the exceptional value of the works selected for the project, exhibition curator Oleksii Vasylenko.

The exhibition project is created for those who seek adventure and impressions in the world of art, as it brings together more than 100 works by outstanding artists of the last century, including works by Vasyl Chehodar, Viktor Zaretskyi, Alla Horska, Mykola Hlushchenko, Yurii Khymych, and many others. “Picturesque Ukraine” is a kind of journey through Ukrainian painting and graphic heritage.
