“Archaeology of Ukraine in the Years of Independence.” Book Presentation

On January 19, at the Museum of Kyiv History, the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine together with the Union of Archaeologists of Ukraine presented the book “Archaeology of Ukraine in the Years of Independence.”

The appearance of this publication was meant to be an important event of 2022, but the full-scale invasion postponed it.

The book offers to readers an accessible overview of the achievements of Ukrainian archaeological science during the years of independence. It is a collective edition that contains the most interesting results of archaeological research on monuments from the earliest times to the early modern period on the territory of Ukraine.

The volume is structured into six main sections, comprising nearly fifty essays:

  • The earliest past of Ukraine: the Stone Age
  • The Eneolithic — Bronze Age
  • The Early Iron Age (from Cimmerians to Sarmatians)
  • Cities and states of Antiquity
  • From Venedi to Antes
  • From the Middle Ages to Modernity

This publication not only summarizes decades of archaeological work but also emphasizes the continuity of research traditions and the importance of archaeology in preserving and understanding Ukraine’s cultural heritage.

The publication provides a chronological description of the main and most famous archaeological sites studied over the past 30 years.

Each section includes a list of recommended literature. Some articles are accompanied by QR codes that allow readers to access more detailed information online.

The presentation was attended by:
— Victor Chabai, Director of the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
— Yevhen Synytsia, Chairman of the Board of the All-Ukrainian NGO Union of Archaeologists of Ukraine
— Serhii Horbanenko, Research Fellow at the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
